“On the night of September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving south on US Route 3 through the White Mountains of New Hampshire when Betty noticed a bright light in the sky that appeared to be following their car.”
Betty began experiencing vivid, disturbing dreams about being taken aboard a craft. Both she and Barney noticed strange physical anomormalities — his shoes were scuffed on top in a way he couldn't explain, her dress had been torn at the hem, and his binoculars strap had a broken clasp. A compass held near their car's trunk would spin wildly. Shiny concentric circles on the trunk glowed under ultraviolet light for weeks.
Under separate hypnotic regression sessions conducted by Boston psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon, Betty and Barney independently gave identical accounts of being taken aboard a craft, separated, and examined by beings who communicated via telepathy. Betty described a "star map" shown to her by one of the beings. Amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish identified the map in 1969 as a three-dimensional representation of the Zeta Reticuli system.
The Hill abduction is the foundational modern abduction case — the template against which all subsequent abduction reports are measured. The consistency between their separate hypnotic testimonies, the physical evidence, and the star map have kept it one of the most studied cases in UFO history for over 60 years.
